Surface Pro for Developers 13 Months Later

Surface Pro13 Months ago the original Surface
Pro hit the stores, and I was one of the first in line to buy one. I
quickly installed everything I needed to make it into one of my development
machines and wrote a blog post discussing my initial impressions.

Back then, one of my biggest
concerns was the 128G hard drive. Would this be big enough for a
development machine? After installing Visual Studio along with the
necessary add-ons that I needed, I ended up with about 70G of free
space.

That was 13 months ago. What about
today? I’ve installed a few other programs–most notability Visual Studio
2013 (along side with the originally installed VS 2012) and Windows 8.1.
I’ve always been aware of my space limitations but I never did obsess about
it. Today I have about 40G of free space, thanks in some part to OneDrive, TFS, USB, and
network drives. With some minimal effort I really never did sweat about
space. The biggest chore is making sure I move those 2.7K and 4K video off
onto another device. Thank God for USB 3 hard drives.

What have I done with the Surface
Pro in the last 13 months?

  • I helped
write over 60 Windows, Windows Phone, and web apps.

  • I gave
numerous presentations at various talks and conferences across the
    country.

  • My wife and I
    ran several large fencing tournaments.

  • I downloaded,
edited, processed, and uploaded HD GoPro videos, many on the
    trail.

  • I worked from
my office, coffee shops, airplanes, cars, waiting rooms, and
    swimming pools.

I have to say I’m extremely pleased
with the Surface Pro’s performance. It’s done almost everything I asked of
it, and I’m very hard on my electronics. I’ve really only had two issues
that I’ve run into. First, my Surface Pro will not connect via Bluetooth to
any of my Nokia phones. It’s apparently a known issue. Second, every once
in awhile it will boot up to a repair screen. Beyond that, it’s been a
pleasure to work with. Currently I have no real need to buy a Surface Pro
2. When the 3rd generation Surface Pro comes out, I might think about
it.
